Why MarkdownTools

Every existing tool either limits you, looks generic, or stores your content.

01

Sub-Second PDF Generation with Headless Chromium

Your PDF renders server-side with the same engine that powers Google Chrome. Not a hacky HTML-to-PDF library — actual browser rendering for pixel-perfect output.

We use @sparticuz/chromium on serverless infrastructure. Your styled HTML is loaded into a real browser instance, rendered with full CSS support including flexbox, grid, and web fonts, then exported as a PDF. The result is indistinguishable from a professionally typeset document.

02🎨

Three Distinct Professional Themes

Clean uses system sans-serif for technical clarity. Classic uses Poppins for warm readability. Elegant uses Montserrat for editorial impact. Each theme is a complete typographic system — not just a color change.

Every theme includes dedicated styling for headings, paragraphs, code blocks, tables, blockquotes, lists, and horizontal rules. Switch themes and see your actual content transform in the live preview before you commit to an export.

03🔒

Privacy-First Architecture — Zero Data Retention

Your content is processed in memory on a stateless serverless function. No database, no file storage, no logs, no sessions. The PDF binary streams back to your browser and the function terminates.

This isn't a privacy policy — it's an architectural constraint. There's no mechanism to store your content even if we wanted to. Compare this to competitors who require accounts, store conversion history, and process files through persistent servers.

04🤖

Purpose-Built for AI-Generated Content

Optimized for the markdown that ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Copilot actually output. Fenced code blocks with Shiki syntax highlighting, GFM tables, nested lists, blockquotes — all rendered correctly.

AI tools generate specific markdown patterns: deeply nested lists, multi-language code blocks, wide tables, and long-form structured content. We've tested against thousands of real AI outputs to ensure everything renders beautifully.

Why Convert Markdown to PDF?

Markdown is the lingua franca of AI tools. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, GitHub Copilot, and dozens of other tools output markdown by default. It's great for writing — lightweight, portable, version-controllable. But it's terrible for sharing.

Send a markdown file to your boss, a client, or a professor and they'll see hash symbols, asterisks, and backticks. They won't see the headings, bold text, and code blocks you intended. PDF solves this — it's the universal document format that renders identically on every device, every operating system, every printer.

MarkdownTools bridges the gap. Paste your markdown, preview it with professional typography, and download a PDF that looks like it came from a design agency — not a text editor.

How Our PDF Conversion Works

When you click "PDF," your browser sends the pre-rendered HTML and theme CSS to our serverless API. The API launches a headless Chromium browser — the same rendering engine that powers Google Chrome — loads your styled document, and generates a pixel-perfect PDF.

The entire process happens in memory on a stateless serverless function. No files are written to disk. No content is logged, cached, or stored in any database. The PDF binary is streamed directly back to your browser as a download. Once the response is sent, the function terminates and your content is gone.

This architecture means your documents are private by design, not by policy. There's nowhere for your content to leak because there's nowhere for it to be stored.

Markdown to PDF vs Other Tools

Most markdown-to-PDF converters fall into two categories: command-line tools that require technical setup (Pandoc, wkhtmltopdf, md-to-pdf), or web tools that limit free usage and serve ads.

MarkdownTools is different. It's a web tool with zero signup, zero ads, and no artificial limits on the free tier. The conversion happens in under a second. You get three professional themes instead of one generic default. And your content is never stored — most competitors can't say that.

For developers already using Pandoc, MarkdownTools isn't a replacement — it's what you send the link to when your non-technical colleague says "can you make this look nice?" For everyone else, it's the fastest way to go from AI output to professional document.

Supported Markdown Features

MarkdownTools supports the full CommonMark specification plus common extensions. This includes headings (h1-h6), bold, italic, strikethrough, inline code, fenced code blocks with language-specific syntax highlighting, blockquotes, ordered and unordered lists with nesting, tables with alignment, horizontal rules, links, and images.

Code blocks are rendered with Shiki — the same syntax highlighting engine used by VS Code. This means your code samples in PDFs have accurate, language-aware coloring for JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, Go, Rust, and dozens of other languages.

The three themes each handle these elements differently. Clean uses a modern sans-serif with generous spacing. Classic uses Poppins with warm, rounded geometry. Elegant uses Montserrat for a magazine-editorial aesthetic with centered h1s and stylized horizontal rules.
